Retrieving WhatsApp deleted messages can be achieved through local storage and the cloud.
Retrieval of WhatsApp messages via local storage:
This retrieval method is only available for Android users and is not supported on iOS. Below is how deleted messages can be retrieved on WhatsApp through local storage.
- Launch the file browser on your device.
- Then go to WhatsApp > Database. This database contains every WhatsApp backup file that has been stored locally.
- Tap on the “msgstore.db.crypt12” file and long tap it and click on the edit name to rename it to “msgstore_backup.db.crypt12”.
- You can then select the recent backup file and just rename it to “msgstore.db.crypt12”.
- Launch your Google drive on your Android phone and tap on the menu (three short vertical lines) located at the top right corner.
- Now tap on “Backups” and delete your WhatsApp backup.
- Then uninstall WhatsApp and re-install it back. During the process of installation, WhatsApp will be asked to restore from local backup, thus, your cloud doesn’t exist again.
- And finally, tap on the “msgstore.db.crypt12” file and tap on the “Restore” button.
After all these steps, your messages have been restored from the recent backup.
NOTE: The reason behind renaming the file is to avoid it from being overwritten.
